Prepare images without guessing
Start with the dimensions your website actually needs. A large camera photo may be far wider than the place it appears. Google's image performance guide explains how dimensions and formats affect delivery.
- Keep the original file somewhere safe.
- Choose a maximum long edge. The tool keeps proportions and does not enlarge small images.
- Choose PNG when transparency matters. Choose JPEG for an opaque photo, checking that a white background is acceptable.
- Inspect text, edges and colours in the output. Lower JPEG quality can introduce visible artifacts.
- Compare file size before replacing a website image. This tool does not guarantee smaller files.
